The Tabletop Geeks User Sites are ready for a public release! They are still a bit of a work in progress as I continue to add new features, but I am comfortable enough with where they are at now to allow everyone to start using them. Here are the details on how to sign up and get started with your own site.

Sign Up

First of all, you need to sign up for a site. If you already have a Tabletop Geeks username then you should login before going to the sign up page. After signing up you will be emailed instructions on how to activate your site.

Edit Your Profile

Once you are activated it’s time to start using it! If you are logged in you’ll have a link to your control panel at the top of your blog page. The first thing you’ll want to do is to edit your user profile with any information about yourself. You can fill in as little or as much as you like and your site will update accordingly.

Create a Gallery

After your profile is set up you have a few options. The main option right now is of course to create galleries and upload photos. With the Gallery link in the navigation bar on the left side you can add a gallery. When adding a gallery you get a few options to specify some information about it; the Game it’s from, the Army it’s from, the Setting, and the miniatures’ Publisher. You may leave any of these blank, but the more you fill out the easier it will be to find your stuff in the directory!

Upload Photos

Once you are set up with a gallery you can start to upload photos. You have several options for what you can do with images once they are uploaded. You can change the thumbnail images, add captions, name the image, rotate the image, and even add your own personal watermark! Your gallery and uploaded photos will automatically start showing up on your site.

Add Posts

You can add some posts to your site as well. Posts can be anything from battle reports to painting logs to your thoughts on any games you are playing to… well, whatever you want to put there. You can add galleries and individual images to your posts as well.

And more!

There is plenty you can do with your site, so poke around your Control Panel page! Most things should be pretty self explanatory. There are plenty of options to play with not only for individual galleries but for the site as a whole (including multiple ways of displaying images). If you have any troubles or can’t figure something out you can always contact us for assistance. I would also love to hear your feedback on the User Sites! What are your thoughts on the layout? I figured I’d give you guys a preview of what’s to come. You may also want to check out the list of current features and future features. I’m hoping to open these up for everyone very shortly, so keep an eye out!

First up is a preview of an actual User Site. This is my personal User Site. The Files link does not work, but otherwise everything there should be working. You can check out my galleries, view my posts, see my profile, and make comments on my galleries.

Also we have the User Sites Directory. The directory is where you can go to see a list of all the galleries on any user site (excluding any that have been made private). You can easily sort through these by several criteria: Game, Army, Setting, and Publisher. Looking for some inspiration for a specific army? This will let you get exactly what you want quickly.

I’ve hand picked a few people to test out the new user pages. I will hopefully be opening them to everyone within a week or so. What can you expect from the user pages? Here’s somethings that are ready and some ideas of what’s to come.

Here are the current features of the user pages for the first version:

  • Your very own personal Tabletop Geeks site with the url of username.tabletopgeeks.com!
  • Free photo hosting. Upload your photos into galleries. Resize, rotate, name, caption, and watermark your photos right on the site! Galleries are automatically displayed on your userpage. Galleries can include information about the photos such as the game they are from, the setting, the army/warband, and the miniatures’ publisher. It is also possible to comment directly on a gallery.
  • Tabletop gaming profile. You can choose to display information about yourself and your gaming right on your page.
  • Your own personal tabletop gaming journal with the ability to include galleries or photos right in your posts. Post up battle reports, painting logs, reviews of new games, or anything else you desire.

That’s not all we’ve got planned though. The following features will be implemented in the future:

  • Site wide directory allowing you to browse through all of the non-private galleries on any user page. Galleries will be searchable and sortable by game, setting, army/warband, and publisher. Expect this shortly!
  • Free file hosting! Upload and share your house rules, custom warbands, or any other tabletop related files you have.
  • Roster builder saving and campaign updating support! You will be able to save your roster builder warbands to your user page for display, and load them into the roster builder to update them throughout a campaign. The roster builder will be getting campaign support to make this possible.

There are a few other possibilities for features in the future, but those are the main three. If you have any questions, suggestions for the user pages, or would like to get in for some early testing on them (we will be adding a few more testers before going live!) then feel free to contact us as always.

Great Success! High fives!

I just realized that as of a few days ago (April 19th) Tabletop Geeks is officially one year old! I realize that the posts go back to March of last year, but those were carried over from a different blog just to show off the table to some friends originally. Here is a recap of the last year as well as some information on what is to come.

I think we have really come a long way in just a year. We started with just a few posts showing off our table, which generated a lot of interest. Then we added pictures of our miniatures. From there we started expanding by adding the downloads section first which people really seemed to like, which lead to putting up terrain downloads. I decided with the success of the downloads that I would create the Roster Builder that I had wanted to do for some time. We started setting up interviews (which reminds me that I need to line up another interview). We managed to pull a lot of great interviews with not only prominent community members, but with the co-creator of Malifaux! After getting into Malifaux I wrote up my first game Review and put up a new Malifaux Downloads page.

As you’ve probably noticed, the Roster Builder is an ongoing work in progress. It’s been continually expanded to add more and more warbands and to support new rules. I will continue to expand on this adding more warbands and eventually allowing you to save and update warbands for a campaign. Another thing I have planned is to put up a page detailing how to create your own database files with your own house rules or custom warbands for the Roster Builder.

The other major feature planned for the site is to allow everyone to have their own personal Tabletop Geeks page with photo hosting. I know this has taken longer than expected, but I have both the code and the display theme ready now, I just need to integrate them and do some testing before I can put that up.

Of course you can also expect to see more of everything else as well… new interviews, more pictures of our works in progress, and more downloads if we find anything worth hosting. As always, if you have any suggestions or requests then please contact us.

Maddie Chambers over at Mad’s Hobbit Hole has made a miniature Bag End hobbit hole replica from the Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring movie. It is simply amazing. It may not be directly related to tabletop gaming, but it is still a beautiful piece of miniature scenery. As both a huge Lord of the Rings fan and a fan of miniature tabletop scenery this is just a very exciting piece.

But don’t just take my word for it, here are a couple sample pictures:

There is now a third button underneath the warband selection box allowing you to select “BTB” (Border Town Burning) in addition to buttons for “Official” and “Unofficial” warbands. A very special thanks to vampirekhaine from Tom’s Boring Mordheim Forum for helping me out by typing up the database files for these. Keep in mind that these are brand new and possibly have a few errors in them or are possibly missing a special rule somewhere, so if you see anything wrong then please let us know! You can either post here, respond to the Roster Builder thread on Tom’s, or contact us directly.

Also, don’t worry! I’m still working on allowing you to save your warband and update it later. That one is going to take some time as there are a LOT of rules to worry about.

It is well worth checking out, enough so that I felt it deserved it’s own news post. Thanks to cianty for pointing it out to me as well.
