Brainstorming

Posted in Terrain on April 30th, 2009 by Svenn

Well, things have been a little slower this week than I would have liked due to school stuff. It’s just about over so I’ll have more time for working on terrain shortly. We’ve got the cobblestone where we want it I think, it’s just a matter of testing out the painting before it’s finished. Once that’s done I’ll put up a post with a full block done up with the painted cobblestone. After that we’ll be re-creating the well piece and finishing up the meteor piece. I can’t wait until we can finish off a full piece.

For now though, I wanted to put up a post with some ideas we’ve had for the terrain and see if we can get some feedback.

Making a Cobblestone Stamp, First Attempt

Posted in How-To, Terrain, Work In Progress on April 27th, 2009 by Svenn
Cobblestone!

Cobblestone!

After the failed attempt at cobblestone on the well piece, we decided we needed a new idea. We needed something that would look like cobblestone and not just gravel.  We also decided that buying tons of Talus was not cost effective (and finding enough rocks of the right sizes and shapes was not very efficient). I found an idea posted by DarkWingDuck on Tom’s Boring Mordheim Forums for making a cobblestone stamp. This was exactly what we were looking for… it’s simple, it’s consistent, and it’s cheap. Our requirements were slightly different so we decided to come up with our own method. Rather than creating a uniform, patterned cobblestone we wanted something rough and random for our city. We decided on using actual stones to create the pattern to give it a more natural look.

Svenn's Possessed Warband

Posted in Miniatures on April 23rd, 2009 by Svenn

possessedwarbandfront

I finally got around to taking pictures of my Possessed Warband to show off. I have the Mordheim Possessed box set, with a modified Possessed model. I’m hoping to pick up some beastman, more Darksouls, and another mutant model or two sometime soon. If anyone has any suggestions on good mutant models or bits, let me know!

The Possessed and the Magister are both finished. They were both painted by me (with a little help from Tewfik, since he’s the superior painter). I added a third arm to the Possessed model. I bought the extra arm bit and attached it with some glue, then used some putty (I can’t remember what it was exactly, it was a few years ago) to make the arm look more naturally attached. The henchman are still a work in progress. All the work on them so far has been done by my girlfriend. The one henchman is missing a spear tip because I cut off the original end and have a studded spear tip to attach instead.

UPDATE: Since people keep bringing it up, the bases are not done. I’m thinking about painting them grey and making them either look like cobblestone or just putting some rubble on them. I’ll post some new pics after the henchman are finished and the bases are all done.

Everyone makes mistakes…

Posted in Failures, Small Blocks, Terrain on April 20th, 2009 by Svenn
No more foam!

No more foam!

We knew the first couple terrain blocks would mostly be practice blocks, so it’s not surprise that things have already gone wrong with both the well and the meteor. We spent too much time just tossing things together without enough planning, and we had to essentially scrap the well piece. We also made a mistake with the meteor that we MIGHT be able to fix. Since most of the time you only ever see the great successes of terrain and not the many failed attempts on the way, I decided to post the failure here so that people can learn from our errors.

Table with Terrain Blocks

Posted in Table, Terrain on April 20th, 2009 by Svenn
Up close and personal.

Up close and personal.

We set up the table this weekend to test out how the blocks all fit together and to see how it looked. We should probably be a little more careful with the measurements of the blocks, but it seems like it works pretty well. I think once the pieces are finished the gaps between the blocks will be less noticeable. It’s pretty exciting to see the whole thing finally coming together.

The pics below are with only half of the table open. I hadn’t thought about it before but since we have an 8′x4′ table then we can actually leave one side of the table down and still have a 4′x4′ area to play a small game which can save some room from opening the full board out. If we get enough people over to play we can pull up the other side and do either a 6′x4′ board or 2 4′x4′ boards.

So, here you go… pics of the table with terrain blocks (and a few of my Possessed figures and Tewfik’s Bretonnian figures) set up for 4′x4′. You can click on the images for the full size versions.

Well/Meteor Update

Meteor

Meteor

We tested out some stuff with the Well and the meteor blocks. We added some cobblestone to the well, and some water to both the well and the meteor. I am not too happy with how the cobblestone turned out, but I think the meteor looks really cool. Check out the pics below, and comment to let us know what you think or if you have any suggestions!

The Well

Posted in Small Blocks, Terrain on April 15th, 2009 by Svenn
Quick! Hide in the well!

Quick! Hide in the well!

The well is coming along nicely. We got the idea for the well when we found a small wooden cylinder that was drilled from a door to make a hole for a doorknob. The cylinder was a little larger than we wanted so we decided to simply cut a hole in the foam base and set it inside. This made it just about the right height that we were looking for.

The start of terrain building…

Posted in Terrain on April 11th, 2009 by Svenn

We started on creating some terrain. We took 1/2″ styrofoam insulation and glued it to 1/4″ particle board to create the blocks. We started by creating blocks of various sizes; 8 12″ squares, 2 18″ squares, 3 6″ squares, a 6″x12″ block, and a 6×18″ block.

We started working on the 6″ square first, with the intentions of creating a small block with a destroyed well. We primed the styrofoam which ate away at it a little, but this gave it a more textured look. We used a textured spray paint as a base for the tile. The goal is to create a destroyed well in the center with cobblestone around it.
